Parents: Sometimes you can't live with them, but you definitely can't live without them. Your relationship with your parents is one of the most important relationships you have. It can also be the most difficult and challenging relationship you have during adolescence. It seems as if you speak different langauges, and you most likley feel that your parents don't undertsand you at all. This link is meant to help you improve and strengthen your relationship with your parents. It is your parents that will provide you long-lasting support throughout all of your life. Establishing a positive relationship now will not only help you through middle school and high school, but it will serve you well for many years to come.

Understand that your parents love you more than you know.

Understanding is a two-way street. If you want your parents to understand you, you must also try to understand your parents. The first thing you should remember is that your parents want you to be happy and successful. All they do is meant to help you, even if you have trouble seeing that.

Commuication is the key.

You need to practice good communication skills with your parents. When you need to discuss something important with your parents, be calm and honest. Losing your temper will not help your cause at all. Also choose your discussion time wisely. Asking for something as soon as they walk in the door is bad idea. Dinnertime can serve as a great opportunity to talk with your parents and have their undivided attention.

Make time to spend with your parents one-on-one.

Like any relationship, time is your most precious gift to give. Remember to spend time with your parents as you do your friends. It does not have to be hours a day, but showing your parents you care about them enough to give of your time, will go along way in establishing a positive relationship with them.

Include your parents.

Invite your parents to attend school events in which you participate. Consult them when making big decisions, and if they can help you with your schoolwork, let them!

Listen to your parents.

Remember that if you want your parents to listen to you, you also need to listen to them as well. They may surprise you with what they have to say. As hard as it is to imagine sometimes, your parents were teenagers once. They may have some insights for you. And even if they don't, they will appreciate the fact that you took the time to listen to what they have to say.

Follow the rules.

Your parents set rules in order to protect you. You may not like them, but every teenager is in your shoes. Proving you are responsible will help you the next time you want your parents to be flexible with you.

Find someone you can confide in about your parents.

When you need help learning how to effectively communicate with your parents, find another adult you can go to. Perhaps you have an aunt or uncle you are close to. You could also talk with a teacher with whom you have a good relationship. Everyone needs help with their parents, and finding a trusting and caring adult that can help you will greatly improve your ability to positively interact with your parents.
